To challenge myself with creating better copy, I sometimes post new spec work on LinkedIn and tag it as #SpecWorkSunday! This page displays some of the spec work I've made!
Gmail spec work based on an assignment from Word Tonic's Newbie Copywriting Course!
The brief: Create a single headline advertising Gmail for the everyday person, and put the image and headline on a billboard.
What I did: I focused on Gmail bringing convenience to everyone using its mail service (including myself) when writing the copy and put it together into this above billboard.
Canva spec work based on an assignment from Word Tonic's Newbie Copywriting Course!
The brief: Create four headline advertising Canva for new professionals (those with little to no design experience), and put the images and headlines on billboards.
What I did: I focused on the convenience and ease of using Canva's platform for new professionals when writing the copy and compiled four billboards.
Jellycat Ad spec work based on a brief from Word Tonic's membership!
The brief: Write up a headline that will be featured in an ad promoting Jellycat’s ‘Fish and Chip’ Pop-up shop at The Toy Shop in Selfridges London, which is a pop-up stall that will be selling limited edition Jellycat soft toys that mimic fish and chip shop orders (yes, really).
What I did: I did some photo-editing to add the plush seagulls Jellycat had from their online store to their promotional image that already featured all of the soft toys mimicking the fish and chip shop orders. I wrote the headline "Grab these fluffy fish and chips....before the seagulls staring them down do!" to create a sense of urgency due to the stall being a limited edition pop-up.
ChapStick ad spec work based on a brief from Word Tonic's membership!
The original brief: Write ten (very creative) headlines to promote a tube of Strawberry ChapStick.
What I did: I created the ten headlines, received feedback from the mentors in the Word Tonic Discord server to improve them, and then created two billboard advertisements based on the best headline out of those ten. I emphasized the "classic" aspect of the Strawberry ChapStick since that was a key word used on the original packaging.
Social Caption spec work based on a brief created using Copywriting Brief Generator.
Client: NightRaiders
Industry: Gaming
Copy Type: Social Caption
Target Audience: Indie game lovers
Goal: Launch a new indie game
Tone: Nostalgic and playful
Bonus Challenge: Keep it under 150 words
What I did: Evoking the cozy vibes of Garden Story and Animal Crossing: New Horizons with creating this fictional game, I wrote the copy imagining players being able to create their own beach resort, but also have a main storyline of looking for hidden treasure in mind. My goal was to make it very cozy, and I also designed the graphic in Canva to go with the written copy!
Social Caption spec work based on a brief created using Copywriting Brief Generator.
Client: ChillPixel
Industry: Gaming
Copy Type: Social Caption
Target Audience: Retro gaming fans
Goal: Tease a new game trailer
Tone: Dark and edgy
Bonus Challenge: Use a call to action
What I did: I focused on creating the dark and edgy tone with my written copy, and designed the graphic using Canva to help emphasize it further. Since the goal was to tease a new game trailer and get more people interested in this (fake) game, I made sure to mention wishlisting the game at the very end so potential players wouldn't miss it!
